Apolo is the 2008 World Champion! | Posted on 09 Mar 2008 by Theresa

Everyone at SimplyApolo.com would like to congratulate, Apolo for winning the
2008 World Title in Korea!

We are so proud of you.

Ohno collects first overall world title

By Dave Ungrady / WCSN.com

Apolo Anton Ohno now has another trophy to put alongside his Dancing with the Stars one.

The ISU World Short Track Speedskating Championships did not start well for Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States.
On the first day of the competition Friday in Gangneung City, the two-time Olympic gold medalist crossed the finish line second but was disqualified in the 1,500 meters after he pushed winner Song Kyung-teak of Korea on the last lap.

But the American closed the championships with a flurry, taking the overall title for the first time while winning a gold medal in the 500 meters Saturday and, on Sunday, a silver medal in the 1,000 meters and a bronze medal in the 3,000 meters super final.

The third-place finish in the 3,000 clinched the overall crown for Ohno. He crossed the line ahead of Lee Ho-Suk by .101 seconds and beat the Korean by five points in the overall standings.

Charles Leveille of the United States won his second medal of the championships in the 3,000 meters, taking the silver. He won the bronze medal in the 1,500 meters Friday.

Wang Meng of China won the women's overall title by 31 points after taking gold medals in the 1,500, 500 and 1,000 meters and finishing fifth in the 3,000 meters super final. Nineteen-year-old Katherine Reutter of the United States, competing in her first world championships, won a bronze medal in the 3,000 meters Sunday.

Song Kyung-taek won the first gold medal for South Korea Friday at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Gangneung, Gangwon Province.

In the men's 1,500-meter race on the opening day of the event, the 24-year-old skater from Dankook University finished first in 2 minutes 18.916 seconds, beating American Apolo Anton Ohno, who was disqualified for a pushing foul after the race.

Compatriot Lee Ho-suk, who crossed the line third, took silver and the race's other American Charles Ryan Leveille became the bronze medallist.

In the final race, which featured three Korean short tracker skaters ― Lee Seung-hoon, who came in fourth, Lee and Song ― out of six skaters, Ohno took the lead with eight laps remaining and held it for five laps.

With three laps to go, Lee Seung-hoon powered into first place, while Ohno and the other two Koreans battled it out behind him.

Song finally took over the lead with one lap left, and did not concede it.

On the women's side, 17-year-old Yang Shin-young won a silver medal behind China's Wang Meng, who clocked 2 minutes 22.819 seconds.

Yang's time was 2 minute 22.904 seconds.

The world short track speed skating meet will last until Sunday.

Local News on the 2008 World's in Korea | Posted on 03 Mar 2008 by Theresa

Sung, Ohno Highlights Short Track Worlds
By Kim Tong-hyung
Staff Reporter

South Korean Sung Si-bak and American Apolo Anton Ohno are among the biggest names participating in the International Skating Union (ISU) World Short Track Speedskating Championships starting Friday in Gangneung, Gangwon Province.

The three-day event will feature 238 athletes from 32 countries competing at the Gangneung Indoor Ice Rink in the last ISU competition of the 2007-08 season.

South Korea, a perennial powerhouse in the sport, is fielding arguably the strongest team in the men's competition, despite the void left by Olympic champion Ahn Hyun-soo, who is recovering from knee surgery.

The absence of Jin Sun-yu, out with an ankle injury, looms larger on the Korean women's squad, which his placing its hopes on teenage prospect Yang Shin-yang and 20-year-old Jung Eun-ju.

Sung, who won the men's 500 meters at the ISU World Cup in Utah, U.S., last month, is padding his reputation as the country's top skater next to Ahn. Lee Seung-hoon, who won the 1,500-meter event in Utah, and Lee Ho-suk are also favorites to win golds.

Challenging the Koreans would be Ohno, the 25-year-old Seattle native who is expected to contend in the 500-meter and 1,500-meter races. Competing in South Korea would have been a dreadful thought for Ohno just years ago, when his controversial 1,500-meter gold in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics caused an outcry here, after he was awarded the medal by successfully protesting that South Korean Kim Dong-sung, who won the race, illegally blocked him.

However, with the emotions of 2002 fading and few memories of Kim, who is now anonymous after a quick retirement and a failed signing career, Ohno has now become somewhat of a celebrity figure in Korea.

Speedskaters glad to be home | Posted on 06 Feb 2008 by Theresa

By Jared Eborn
Deseret Morning News

KEARNS — Making their first World Cup appearance on American ice in more than a year has the U.S. short track speedskating team excited.

Not only are this weekend's races the final ones of the season before next month's world championships in China, they are a rare opportunity to perform in front of family and friends all while sleeping in their own beds and skating on a familiar surface.

"It's the most exciting world cup," said rising star Katherine Reutter, "considering it's right here on our own ice."

Reutter will be joined by the rest of her U.S. teammates — including Olympians Apolo Anton Ohno, Alison Baver and Jeff Simon — at the Utah Olympic Oval. It's the first major international short track event to be held at the facility since the team relocated to Utah from Colorado Springs about a year ago.

Athletes from around the world, including many who are hoping to find themselves atop the medal podium at the 2010 Vancouver Games, will take part in three days of competition.

Last week, in Quebec for a World Cup event, the Americans earned a silver medal in the men's 5,000 relay while Baver brought home a bronze in the women's 1,500.

Apolo in VOGUE magazine?! | Posted on 29 Jan 2008 by Theresa
Jessica Stam may have the ice-eyes, but we hear Doutzen Kroes is the model who's getting the literal cold shoulder from Vogue this week:

She's been shooting at an ice rink with speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and Annie Leibowitz - apparently, they've even made the Dutch model her own pair of speed skates!

No word on what else the Victoria's Secret face will be wearing, though Nike and Adidas are big advertisers in the magazine, so of course those are possibilities.

Then again, Vera Wang is both a former figure skater and a former Vogue editor, and often made ice costumes for Olympic champion Michelle Kwan...

And if they really want to surprise everyone, Richie Rich was also once a professional Ice Capader, and sometimes creates his own spandex creations for skating exhibitions.

We're not betting on that last possibility, but whatever - a little glitter never killed anyone.
